What is Anti-Orthoism?
Anti-Orthoism is defined by the opposition of a right angle's restraints. It's confinement!
"Anti," makes reference to one that is opposed. Anti breaks away from the mass.
The word "Ortho" is an abbreviation for Orthogonal, which by definition refers to right angles. Rectangles and Squares are strictly confined to ninety-degree angles.
"Ism" is the distinct practice of something.
Why artists can't seem to see past the rectangular and square shaped canvas is a tragedy. The artists goes to the Art Store because it's the only place on Earth to find Art Supplies. A canvas, paint, a pallet, and an assortment of brushes. These are the tools of the trade right? These are our options. This is the world we live in, the world which was given to us. Given to us!
Anti-Orthoism breaks the barriers of the typical orthogonal shaped canvas. It begins with a careful planning process. A concept generated from visions, eventually develop into a much more detailed, precision built canvas stretcher that is almost sculpture-like in form. These canvas/sculptures communicate directly with the subject matter, allowing the painting to have a greater sense of motion and space. It is painting driven outward without limitations or restraints. With conventional painting one works within an area. There is point where the painting is influenced by the edges of that area, usually a rectangle or square.
Anti Orthoism liberates the artists from these restraints. It permits every element of a painting to communicate directly with the intended focus of attention. Even the structural aspects such as a stretcher bar are included as part of the composition.
